Bugatti Galibier Concept

During its centenary celebration ceremonies, Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. presented customers and opinion-makers with the Bugatti Galibier Concept, intended to be the most exclusive, elegant, and powerful four door automobile in the world last weekend in Molsheim.

Bugatti's current president, Franz-Josef Paefgen emphasised that the Bugatti Galibier 16C is one of several concept studies with which the company is considering for the future of the Bugatti marque.

"Art - Forme - Technique" are the historic brand values to which the design and engineering team of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. oriented themselves in the development of the Bugatti Galibier.

The four-door concept features a body is constructed of handmade carbon fibre parts coloured dark blue so that, when illuminated, the woven structure shimmers through strikingly. The wings and doors are out of polished aluminium.

The Bugatti Galibier's design adopts a basic architecture inspired by the torpedo-like character of the Type 35, which was already revived in the Bugatti Veyron, and reinterprets it.

Bugatti Galibier 16C Concept InteriorBeneath the hood, which folds back from both sides, resides a 16-cylinder, 8-litre engine with twostage supercharging.

The engine is a flex-fuel unit and can optional be run on ethanol. Technical highlights include four-wheel drive, specially developed ceramic brakes and a new suspension design enable the agile, always-sure handling of a saloon of this size.

The interior reflects the elemental design of the exterior. The dash panel has been reduced to the essential; two centrally located main instruments keep even the rear passengers constantly informed of the actual speed and previous performance.

Parmigiani, the Swiss maker of fine watches, created the removable Reverso Tourbillon clock for the Bugatti Galibier, which may be worn on the wrist thanks to a leather strap.

"Galibier" is not just the name of one of the most difficult alpine passes along the Tour de France but, in its time, was a version of the four door Type 57.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

Debuting at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG features an aluminium spaceframe body with gullwing doors, and is powered by an AMG 6.3-litre V8 front-mid engine developing 420 kW/ 571 hp peak output, 650 Nm of torque and dry sump lubrication.

The unit is coupled with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission in a transaxle configuration, and sports suspension with aluminium double wishbones. The total weight is limited to 1620 kilograms.

The layout has a front/rear weight distribution of 47 to 53 percent and a low centre of gravity.

Mercedes Benz SLS AMGThe new 'Gullwing' accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, and reachesa top speed of 317 km/h (electronically limited).

The average combined fuel consumption is 13.2 litres per 100 kilometres.

The tires are 265/35 R 19 (front) and 295/30 R 20 (rear).

The SLS AMG is scheduled to be launched in spring 2010. The sales price is EUR 177,310 (incl. 19% VAT).

Mercedes Benz SLS AMGWith its purist design the new SLS AMG reflects the philosophy of contemporary sports car engineering: the hood which measures just under two metres, the low greenhouse positioned well to the rear and the short rear-end with an extendable aerofoil are just as powerful a reminder of the superlative dynamism as the long wheelbase, the wide track and the large wheels.

The proportions are defined by the short overhangs and the low-slung front-mid engine set well back and dual-clutch transmission in transaxle configuration.

The gullwing doors are not alone in rekindling memories of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL; the hallmark wide radiator grille with the large Mercedes star and the wing-shaped cross fins are a throwback to the front-end of the sports car legend.

Mercedes Benz SLS AMGThe three-dimensional, sculptured front-end with its low-set, swept-back front apron set well into the sides lends the 'Gullwing' its powerful stance on the road.

Six large cooling air intakes and the vertically arranged headlamps set well to the outside with their alluring inner ambience provide a dominant aura: the central bi-xenon low-beam headlamp with its metallic wing section is framed at the top by two LED indicators and the LED daytime driving lights at the bottom.

Allusions to aircraft construction include the tubular section which is reminiscent of the air intake on a jet engine when viewed from the side, as well as the long hood: as the eye is drawn forward, so the observer becomes more aware of the curve.

The design of the four fins with their Silver Shadow finish that adorn the two air outlet grilles on the end of the hood create the same visual impression.

These aircraft-style lines also visually accelerate the air that flows past – and make the SLS AMG appear extremely dynamic even while stationary.

The fins on the hood are taken up on the vehicle flanks: the connoisseur also discovers here a hallmark styling feature of the 300 SL. The "6.3" lettering placed between the fins provides a clear reference to the high-displacement naturally aspirated V8 engine.

The side air outlet feeds through into a stylistically prominent feature line, which together with the convex flanks and the surface treatment, combines aesthetics with power.

The compact passenger compartment has a high beltline, low side windows and steeply angled. The forward angled B-pillar with its stylish flowing sweep to the rear window exudes pure dynamism.

Mercedes Benz SLS AMGSeen from the side, the eye is drawn to the prominent vehicle shoulder of the SLS, which stretches like a taut muscle from the front to the rear.

19-inch (front) and 20-inch (rear) light-alloy wheels fill the wheel arches, which stand out prominently from the sidewall. Three different wheel variants all provide a glimpse of the large composite brakes.

Seen from above, a prominent, uninterrupted line runs from the muscle to the rear. This styling feature is also picked up on the hood where the eye follows a distinctive contour which flows over the roof between the gullwing doors, right through to the third brake light.

Mercedes Benz SLS AMGThe rear view of the SLS is characterized by the gently sloping boot lid which emphasises a sense of width, an impression reinforced by the prominent vehicle shoulder and the sleek tail lights: fitted with LED technology, the horizontally structured lighting units provide a scintillating view. Wing-shaped LED lighting elements ensure a distinctive night design.

The Formula-1-style LED fog lamp/reversing light is set down low in the centre. Similarly inspired by motor racing are the black diffuser insert and the two chromed tailpipes of the sports exhaust system.

The tapered rear apron provides an unimpeded view of the wide rear wheels.

The spoiler integrated in the boot lid is automatically deployed from a speed of 120 km/h to ensure optimum stability at high speeds.
New colours: "AMG ALU-BEAM silver" and two matt finishes

Mercedes Benz SLS AMGThe colour charts for the SLS include nine paint finishes. The unique "AMG ALU-BEAM silver" paintwork features a unique process which makes the paint shine like liquid metal.

The paint covers the body panels like a metallic skin, emphasises the scintillating design lines of the 'Gullwing' more strongly than any previous paint job and makes them even livelier by means of targeted light reflections. This effect is made possible thanks to tiny pigments measuring between 30 and 50 nanometres.

The two matt finishes "designo magno allanite grey" and "AMG magno sylvanite grey" have a matt silk surface that reinforces the sporty character of the two-seater through specific contouring of the crease lines.

Aluminium spaceframe

SLS AMG SpaceframeThe SLS is the first Mercedes-Benz and AMG with an aluminium chassis and body, which allows to achieve a DIN kerb weight of 1620 kilograms.

The bodyshell comprises an aluminium spaceframe, characterized by lightweight aluminium sections that connect the force nodes to a sturdy structure.

The large, low-set cross-sections of these aluminium sections ensure high resistance torque, thus providing the required direct transfer of drive, braking and suspension forces. The structure prevents unwanted flexibility; the vehicle responds rigidly, almost without twisting and directly.

45 percent of the aluminium spaceframe is made out of aluminium sections, 31 percent out of aluminium sheet, 20 percent out of aluminium cast and 4 percent out of steel.

SLS AMG LayoutMaximum occupant safety requires the use of ultra-high-strength, heat-formed steel in the A-pillars. The bodyshell weighs 241 kilograms – an absolute benchmark in the super sports car segment when compared with the peak output of 420 kW/571 hp.

Another is the transverse reinforcing struts at the front and rear axle that are integrated into the bodyshell structure.

The sections connect the side members precisely where the highest forces act upon the bodyshell under dynamic cornering.

The advantages of this sophisticated solution include transverse rigidity and the absence of heavy secondary stiffening or supports.

Lightweight construction was also key when it came to the wheels: weight-optimised AMG light-alloy wheels – 9.5 x 19 inch (front) and 11.0 x 20 inch (rear) – based on the innovative flow-forming principle reduce the unsprung masses while increasing driving dynamics and suspension comfort.

Interior Design

SLS AMG InteriorFor the interior, the Mercedes-Benz designers took their inspiration from aircraft construction when styling the interior – immediately bringing an aircraft cockpit to mind.

The characteristic styling feature is the dashboard, whose wing shape makes for an impression of width. Integrated into the dashboard are the galvanised air vents with their adjustable, cruciform nozzles and Silver Shadow finish – their shape reminiscent of a jet's engines.

The instrument cluster with its LED upshift indicator and two white backlit dial instruments add a sporty touch with their metallic Silver Shadow finish.

SLS AMG InteriorThe silver dials have red needles and a 360 km/h speedometer scale. As a central feature of the cockpit, the COMAND APS multimedia system with its 7-inch screen is integrated between the two centre air vents.

The elongated centre console in matt metal similarly picks up on the design theme of the aircraft cockpit. It is home to the AMG DRIVE UNIT, which is inclined towards the SLS driver and allows them to choose their very own vehicle setup.

The E-SELECT shift lever, whose styling recalls the thrust control of a jet, controls the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission. All the controls are made out of solid metal, with a high-sheen Silver Shadow surface.

The concave inner panels of the gullwing doors, the high beltline and the side sill panels round off the cockpit-like impression.

Fine materials such as nappa leather, solid metal and (optional) carbon-fibre facings underline the "custom-built" nature of the SLS interior. Five different designo leather colours are available to meet individual preferences: black, classic red, sand, porcelain and light brown.

SLS AMG InteriorDespite the low sitting position of just 369 millimetres in typical sports car fashion, the wide-opening gullwing doors make it easy to get in and out of the vehicle. At the design stage great attention was paid to the widest possible opening angle – it is a full 70 degrees.

The distance between the open doors and the road surface is 1.50 metres, while the entry aperture between the open doors and the upper edge of the door sills measures 1.08 metres.

The entrance height, i.e. the distance between the road surface and the upper edge of the door sills is a very low 45 centimetres.

The gullwing doors require less opening space than conventional coupé doors, and can be fully opened in a normal garage.

The grip section of the armrest moulded into the interior door panel ensures problem-free door closing.

The operating buttons for the power windows, central locking system and exterior mirror adjustment are also located in the interior door panels for easy access.

The leather steering wheel in a three-spoke design has a 365-millimetre rim with a flattened lower section, shift paddles and a metal insert. The sports seat backrests are made from magnesium and feature the so-called two-zone seat cushions.

Lexus LF-Ch Concept

Making its world debut at the 2009 Frankfurt motor show, the Lexus LF-Ch full hybrid concept is Lexus’s first approach to the competitive European premium compact segment.

The exterior design is characterized by "powerful surfacing and hand-sculpted details" inspired by the brand's L-finesse design philosophy

Blacked-out B-pillars and concealed rear door handles create the look of a pillarless coupé.

The interior features and asymmetric dashboard and Remote Touch controls.

The Lexus LF-Ch Concept reflects the growing demand for cars that are smaller and more fuel and CO2 efficient. "By next year the compact segment is expected to claim the largest share of the European premium car market."

Exterior design

Lexus LF Ch ConceptThe LF-Ch concept presents a powerful evolution of Lexus’s L-finesse design philosophy.

Rooted in Japanese culture, L-finesse is expressed in every aspect of the car, not only in the visual harmony between the interior and exterior design, but also in the combination of leading-edge engineering and technology with a user-friendly simplicity of function.

The designers focused on the careful juxtaposition of opposing major and minor elements.

Intriguing contrasts are created between the powerful, machine-like overall surfacing of the bodywork and the painstaking detail of even the smallest elements, creating a synergy between technologically driven design and a fluid, hand-sculpted quality.

Lexus LF Ch ConceptA new, bolder Lexus grille design sits above a deep, full-width bumper and air dam, giving a perfect balance of precision and power.

The sharply sculpted, aerodynamic front wings overlap the front bumper to create deep, front brake-cooling air intakes and give the LF-Ch a powerful and purposeful wide-track stance.

In profile, the tapered side glazing, a muscular, rising beltline and a sharply truncated rear overhang project the car’s premium compact character.

The steeply raked windscreen, long flowing roofline, blacked-out B-pillars and rear doorhandles integrated in the C-pillar window trim combine to give the appearance of a sporting pillarless coupe.

The tailgate section has a pronounced step, which flows from the muscular wheelarches and is anchored by the wraparound tail lamp design.

Aerodynamic detailing of the lower bumper smoothes airflow from beneath the car and feeds ventilation to the rear brakes.

Subtle finishing touches include discreet Lexus hybrid blue badging and sharply tapering chrome mouldings.

The harmonious synergy of the design is further expressed in the contrasting, lively yellow exterior finish and calming blue interior illumination.

Interior design

Lexus LF Ch Concept Interior The principles of L-finesse are carried through to the interior where again a powerful simplicity harmonises with hand-crafted quality in the detailing to create a calm, efficient and elegant design.

The cabin features a strongly asymmetric dashboard that is firmly driver-focused with outstanding ergonomics.

The driver’s needs are seamlessly anticipated in several surprising elements, for example, when the car is started a greeting is presented on the navigation screen and an ambient lighting pattern appears in the headliner, creating a sophisticated lounge feel.

Extensive use of semi-aniline leather, polished aluminium, wood and soft-touch materials reinforces the theme of harmonious contrast in the dashboard, door panels and seating.

Lexus LF Ch Concept InteriorThe design of the seats is inspired by high quality furniture, with exposed metal frames, lightweight leather and grained black wood used in inter-related layers, shaped to reflect the intrinsic nature of each material used.

The driving position is low and well-supported, with a wide-grip steering wheel with paddle shift controls and an instrument binnacle housing large twin dials embellished with a turbine motif.

To help keep the driver’s focus on the road ahead, distracting instrumentation and switchgear has been kept to a minimum by using Lexus Remote Touch controls, as first seen in the new RX 450h.

Using a multi-information display on top of the dashboard, Remote Touch works like a computer mouse, letting the driver access control and customise a range of information, entertainment and vehicle set-up programmes.

As with every Lexus, hospitality is at the heart of the ownership experience. To this end, the LF-Ch’s comprehensive on-board entertainment package includes iPhone docking for rear seat passengers.

Powertrain and driving performance

Thanks to a wide track, long wheelbase and low centre of gravity, the LF-Ch’s full hybrid powertrain is engineered to deliver all the performance customers expect from a premium compact hatchback, while at the same time returning low fuel consumption, CO2 and NOx emissions.

With the benefit of the full hybrid technology of Lexus Hybrid drive, the car can be driven in a fully electric EV mode, a power option that is not available to drivers of mild hybrids. This allows for urban driving with minimal noise and zero emissions.

Volkswagen E-Up Concept

Debuting at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the E-Up! Concept represents Volkswagen's vision of a electric city car for the next future.

Main highlights include the 3+1 seating layout, a driving range of up to 130 km and a top speed of 135 km/h.

The design is derived from the previous concept vehicle sin the Up! Series. A production model based on this prototype could be marketed within 2013.

The front-mounted electric motor of the front-wheel drive car develops a a peak power output of 60 kW (continuous power: 40 kW) and a maximum torque of 210 Nm right from rest.

Thanks to the weight limited to 1,085 kg, the 0-100-km/h sprint takes 11.3 seconds, while the intermediate sprint from 0 to 50 km/h in city driving takes just 3.5 seconds.

The car’s low weight is remarkable, given the fact that 240 kilograms are taken up by the lithium-ion battery., which is housed in the underbody in a special, crash-protected tray.

The battery’s energy capacity of 18 kilowatt-hours (kWh) enables driving distances of up to 130 kilometres, depending on driving style – enough for the city and the drives of most commuters.

VW E Up! ConceptDepending on the available charging infrastructure and the battery’s momentary charge state, the storage battery could be charged to up to 80 percent of its total capacity within an hour.

If the batteries are recharged in a home garage, for example, by plugging it into a 230-Volt household outlet, this would take a maximum of five hours.

Refueled at night the E-Up! could be driven 100 kilometres for just two Euros in electricity costs (about 14 Euro cents / kWh).

Exterior Design

VW E Up! Concept Design SketchThe E-Up! was designed by a team led by Group Chief Designer Walter de Silva.

Together with Klaus Bischoff (Chief Designer, Volkswagen Brand) and Flavio Manzoni (Head of Creative Design, Volkswagen Group), he developed a layout for the E-Up! that reflects the visual bandwidth of the future New Small Family.

The E-Up! bears a resemblance to previously presented concept vehicles of this new model series – the Up! (city specialist), Space-Up! (microvan) and Space-Up Blue! (fuel cell powered van) – it represents a design stage that reflects the future production car even more closely.

VW E Up! Concept Design Sketch“The E-Up!”, says Klaus Bischoff, “is characterised by a reduced, very clear and yet highly emotional design.”

And that is certainly no coincidence. The car’s lines consistently follow Volkswagen’s new era “design DNA” that was developed by de Silva, Bischoff and Manzoni.

Its key stylistic traits: Simplicity, purity, durability and perfection of its technologies and quality.

Bischoff: “The new concept is therefore very much in harmony with its stylistic ‘siblings’ of the New Small Family, the Roadster BlueSport and the new Polo.”

Dimensions of the E-Up! are 3.19 meters (length) x 1.64 meters (width) x 1.47 meters (height). Its wheelbase is 2.19 meters.

Front end

VW E Up! ConceptAlthough E-Up! styling was developed from the Up!, the electric car differs from conventionally powered models in the new model series.

Consider the front end: It fits in perfectly with the brand’s new family face, yet at the same time it refers back to one of the greatest icons in automotive history in the area of the engine bonnet: the Beetle.

Nonetheless, the E-Up! does not reveal the slightest hint of retro styling; instead, designers created new and unmistakable styling tools that would carry the small Volkswagen far into the future.

Fitting in with this image are the headlights with their facet-like lenses – cut like diamonds – that extend over the entire width of the lens cover. Another interesting detail: the fog lights. At first glance they can hardly be recognised as such.

The designers have configured them as C-shaped, chrome-trimmed elements in the headlight housings. Also style-defining is the black line running in a circular pattern in the bumper – a typical characteristic of the New Small Family.

“In the in- terplay of all elements, the bumper, headlights and engine bonnet,” explains Klaus Bischoff, “the E-Up! really appears to smile. And that is how it should be.” Conspicuous: There are hardly any openings at the front end, since there is no need for separate cooling of the drive unit.

The VW logo on the V-shaped engine bonnet of the E-Up! is more than just an homage to the Beetle. Hidden behind the folding logo is the integrated port for charging the batteries. The advantage of positioning the plug port here is that it makes it easier to recharge the E-Up! from stations on either the left or right sides of the street or directly in front of the car.

Side profile

VW E Up! Concept“In keeping with Volkswagen’s “design DNA” the side sections also exhibit a high level of stylistic purity, following the Bauhaus principle created in the 1920s in Germany that ‘less is more’,” says Flavio Manzoni.

This car’s visual identity is very intentionally created by just a few graphic elements that blend together to form a new unit in the classic Bauhaus approach to creative art and innovative technology.

These defining elements of the E-Up! side profile include its side glass and shoulder styling line above the door handles known as the tornado line. The side profile styling is further defined by the car’s short body overhangs, the confident outward shaping of the wheel housings and unique C-pillar.

VW E Up! ConceptFlavio Manzoni explains the special presence of the C-pillar: “Visually, the vertically aligned C-pillar is positioned above the rear wheel, which conveys a feeling of balance and solidity.

"These properties are indispensable for a Volkswagen. Last but not least, the prominent and powerful wheel styling gives the car a perfect ‘demeanour’”.

Rear end

The basic graphic forms of the tailgate and rear bumper follow those of the very first Up! However, the once again completely glazed tailgate now exhibits significantly larger taillights in dark smoked glass look.

Running through the taillights is a line trimmed in chrome that extends across the tailgate. The circular chrome line unites the two taillights in a vertical direction. These accents are also reflected in the matching graphic element of the front and rear bumpers.

Solar roof

The roof of the E-Up! is equipped with solar cells over an area measuring 1.4 square meters.

This area – between the rear part of the roof edge spoiler and the front windscreen – can be enlarged to 1.7 square meters in total by folding down the sun visors that are also equipped with solar cells. The solar cells continuously supply energy to the car’s electrical system, and while the vehicle is parked they help to cool the interior by supplying energy to the car’s ventilation system.

Interior Design

VW E Up! Concept Interior Design SketchFlavio Manzoni: “The interior was designed in complete harmony with the car’s exterior styling, and it exhibits a similar aesthetic with a technical-purist influence.”

The generous space was implemented over a total vehicle area of just 5.1 square meters. Several factors are responsible for this clever packaging. First, there is the reduced size of the instrument panel, which was shifted further forward than usual toward the engine compartment.

This was enabled, among other things, by optimising the components within the instrument panel. Second, the small Volkswagen is a 3+1 seater.

This means that the front passenger seat is located 50 millimetres forward, thanks to the instruments being shifted further forward.

This layout increases leg room in the rear behind the front passenger tremendously. As a result, two adults can sit comfortably on the passenger’s side.

VW E Up! Concept InteriorTo improve the electric car’s energy economy by avoiding unnecessary loads, actuators such as mirror adjustment and window lifts were designed to be manually operated.

Nonetheless, the E-Up! makes its appearance with an array of high-tech displays and controls.

They are all quite self-explanatory, and the car’s controls are intuitive.

The concept car has a touch-screen based HMI (Human Machine Interface) with intelligent E-Up! specific indicators and assistance functions.

During navigation, the system continually monitors the momentary load state of the batteries, for example, as well as activated energy consumers such as lights and air conditioner, momentary traffic data, elevation profiles of potential routes and the locations of available charging stations.

The driver can display these “filling stations” at any time; available charging stations may be reserved within a defined reservation time period.

VW E Up! Concept InteriorThe charging process can also be precisely planned to the minute via the HMI. This lets users charge the E-Up! during a specific time period in which electricity is available at special low rates.

Moreover, to preserve vehicle battery power the program lets users pre-condition the E-Up! interior. This involves cooling or heating the car’s interior as long as the car is still connected to the charging station and is drawing its electrical power from the electrical grid.

Stepping into the vehicle is simplified by an Easy-Entry feature, which allows the front passenger’s seat to be pushed up to 270 millimetres away from the rear bench.

There is less leg room behind the “normally” positioned driver’s seat; the space here was designed as a spare seat.

Additional freedom of movement is provided to rear passengers by lowering the centre tunnel in front of the rear bench seat; it serves as an additional footrest. This enables use of an electric handbrake in the style of the Passat, so that no lever mechanism obstructs the footwell.

When the backrest on the driver’s seat is folded down (40 percent section), stowage capacity is increased from 85 to 180 litres (with loading to the upper edge of the front seat backrest).

When the entire rear seating backrest is folded down, a stowage capacity of 320 litres is created. It is even 520 litres when loaded to the roofliner.

To transport long objects, the front passenger’s backrest can also be folded to a pass-through position.

In this configuration, the E-Up! can handle objects up to two metres in length.

The future of electric cars for VW

Speaking about the future of electric cars, Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Group, explains: “One of the basic milestones on this timeline is the mass produced electric car."

“Cars with pure gasoline and diesel engines – which in the foreseeable future will continue be unbeatable for mid- to long-range distances – will be supplemented by cars like the E-Up! in upcoming years, especially in the city. And that will happen starting in 2013.

"Nonetheless, until the production numbers of a purely electric car approach the success curve of a Polo, its schedule will indicate the year 2020 at the earliest."
